What Is the Endocannabinoid System?
It is important to understand the part of the human body that CBD interacts with. This system is known as the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). The Endocannabinoid System (ECS), named after the plant that led to its discovery, is perhaps the most important physiologic system involved in establishing and maintaining human health.
To briefly explain, this system is made up of neurotransmitters (primarily anandamide and 2-AG) and receptors (primarily CB1 and CB2). This system regulate our mood, appetite, sleep rhythm, energy levels, immunity, and cognitive functioning. These cannabinoid receptors interact with our own naturally occurring cannabinoids. This system is involved in regulating many functions in the body. For example: metabolism and appetite, mood and anxiety, and pain perception.
The endocannabinoid system plays a vital role in the human body by regulating our physiology, mood, and everyday experience. It is also known as the Biochemical Communication System in the human body. For example, it contributes to exercise-induced euphoria, also known as runner’s high. Runner’s high is a pleasurable sensation that a person experiences when engaging in extended periods of aerobic exercise.
Endocannabinoids and their receptors are found throughout the body: in the brain, organs, connective tissues, glands, and immune cells. In each tissue, the cannabinoid system performs different tasks. However, its main goal is to maintain physiological balance in the body (known as homeostasis), despite fluctuations in the external environment.
CB1- en CB2-receptoren
Unlike THC, which can bind to CB1 receptors, CBD can’t bind perfectly to CB1 and CB2 receptors. The result is a stimulated activity without an actual binding. This means that any cell containing a CB1 or CB2 receptor is altered by the interaction with CBD. Since these receptors are found in almost every part of the body, including the brain, the effects of those changes are noticeable throughout the system. It is this interaction that causes the effects felt by humans after using a CBD supplement.
